Do you need to submit a self-assessment tax return?
If you are self-employed, a limited company director, or earned taxable income during the tax year, you must fill out and send an HMRC tax return. This process is mandatory for individuals falling under these categories to report their income and pay the appropriate taxes to HM Revenue & Customs.
More specifically, you may have to complete your tax return online if you fall into one of the following categories:
- Self-employed (sole trader) who has earned more than £1,000 in the tax year.
- A partner in a business partnership.
- Received a rental income.
- Received income from savings, investments and dividends.
- Received child benefit and you or your partner’s income was over £50,000.
- Wanting to claim certain tax reliefs.
- PAYE income of above £100K.
- Have sold assets in the tax year, such as additional properties or shares.
Important dates for self-assessment tax return filing
Register for self-assessment by 5th October 2024 if you need to complete a tax return for the first time, allowing you to obtain your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) number and activation code.
Self-employed individuals must make their second payment on account by 31st July 2024 for the 2023-24 tax year.
Submit a paper tax return by 31st October 2024, for the UK tax year 2023/24.
The deadline for filing an online tax return for the UK tax year 2023/24 is 31st January 2025.
31st January 2025, is the deadline for the balancing payment if tax is still owed after the initial payment on account for the 2023-24 tax year. It is also the deadline for filing online tax returns for the 2022-23 tax year.
Pay any tax owed by 31st January 2025, in the UK. Late payments may incur penalties.
Submit an online return by 30th December if you want HMRC to automatically collect tax owed from your wages and pension in the UK.
